ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR

EVA MAE BAUCOM, CMI, FAMI
MS, BIOMEDICAL VISUALIZATION

Eva Mae Baucom (Natividad) is a first-generation Filipino American board-certified medical illustrator and animator focused on telling underrepresented stories in science and medicine. With a passion for accessibility and empowerment in public health, design, and patient education, Eva Mae strives to combine research and art in a sciartivist movement to improve health literacy in engaging and actionable ways.

Using everything from ink drawings and Apple Pencils to data visualizations and interactive platforms, Eva Mae is inspired by all forms of media and technology to meaningfully present compelling biomedical information. As an independent artist and founder of Afferent Visual Science, Eva Mae currently applies many years of professional training and experience to help scientists and companies visualize clinical training materials, journal figures, and e-learning courses. She also creates bi-weekly medical animations for The New England Journal of Medicine that summarize novel research findings.

In an effort to expand the impact of scientific communication, Eva Mae regularly volunteers in professional organizations such as the Association of Medical Illustrators as part of the Scholarship, Newsletter, and Diversity Committees, and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. Previously, she was Creative Director for the multi-award-winning immersive training company Embodied Labs integrating 360 film and medical animations into embodied, virtual reality patient experiences for healthcare professionals and family care partners.

Eva Mae received her BS in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior and a minor in Art Studio at the University of California, Davis, and went on to complete her MS in Biomedical Visualization at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
